Folks on Smith Street will storm the barricades a day early this year, as the long-running Brooklyn Bastille Day celebration pays tribute to liberté, égalité and fraternité with much live music, copious crepes and plenty of pastis to wash them down. The centerpiece of the day is a pétanque tournament, the nation's largest (it's something like bocce, but with steel, rather than wooden, balls). The competition, which is ferocious, gets underway at noon.
