  • American Black Film Festival
    June 19–22
This is the first year that New York City plays host to the American Black Film Festival, which shines a spotlight on independent narrative, documentary and short films by and about African-Americans. Founded in 1997, the festival has grown exponentially over the years, encompassing screenings, panel discussions, workshops, a stand-up comedy competition and a final night "ABFF Honors" event, which recognizes the year's best movies and the accomplishments of film luminaries (including, in years past, Lee Daniels, Morgan Freeman and Spike Lee). Actor Morris Chestnut (The Best Man Holiday) serves as this year's celebrity ambassador.
