  • The Peacock and The Shakespeare
    24 E. 39th St., 646-837-6776, Murray Hill, Manhattan
The Peacock is where Lady Mary and Lady Edith of Downton Abbey would dine when visiting the city. The Shakespeare is more for Anna and Mr. Bates on a date night. The pair of cozy, British-themed venues occupy a Murray Hill townhouse, with the Peacock upstairs, naturally, and the Shakespeare downstairs. Chef Jason Hicks (who is from Stratford-upon-Avon, incidentally) and Yves Jadot of Jones Wood Foundry are the team behind the operation. At the wood-paneled Peacock, the menu encompasses such offerings as roast fillet of Scottish salmon, steak and chips and sticky toffee pudding. Its separate Library Bar focuses on lighter bites like crab on toast and prawns with lemon mayonnaise and cocktail sauce. The Shakespeare's menu has many of the same pub classics as upstairs but also more Labour Party standard-bearers like bangers and mash as well as fish and chips.
