  • Narcissa
21 Cooper Sq., 212-228-3344, East Village, Manhattan
Andre Balazs's Standard East Village has brought a higher level of style to the neighborhood along with a serious and sexy restaurant that's pulling in a cross section of bon vivants. Narcissa is named for a cow on Balazs' Hudson Valley farm, Locusts on Hudson, which supplies many of the ingredients for Michelin-starred chef John Fraser's menu. There may be no better way to eat carrots than his hot, crisp, tempura-fried sticks buried in fronds of fresh herbs and served with a refreshing and spicy jalapeño-tofu dip. A rotisserie comes into play with whole branzino, baby chicken with sausage and roast potatoes soaked in juices. The restaurant is divided in two, with a pale-wood-detailed room full of zigzag nooks overlooking a courtyard garden and the happening open kitchen with a chef's counter where you can scrutinize how your supper is made.
