Front Toward Enemy
40-11 30th Ave., 718-545-2269, Astoria, Queens
Another sign that Astoria is on track to become the Williamsburg of Queens: Front Toward Enemy, a polished gin mill with oysters, charcuterie and artisanal cheese among other refinements. The name refers to directional instructions on a remote-controlled US military mine, but the feeling here is one of camaraderie, not warfare. Co-owners Tim Lorito and Matt Dill have crafted a handsome space with beautiful woodwork, vintage wallpaper and black leather, and they've hired masters of mixology to stir and shake proper drinks with crystal-clear, specialty ice. Of the cooked items, the most straightforward are the best, like the Black Angus burger and the beer-battered fish and chips. The roomy booths and communal tables make it great for groups, though not for sports events as there are no TVs. Check their Twitter feed for live music announcements and happy hour specials.
