Parmys Persian Fusion
125 First Ave., 212-335-0207, East Village, Manhattan
More Persian than fusion, Parmys is owned by an Iranian brother and sister, Amir and Mojgan Raoufi, who realized their mother's recipes were too good to keep to themselves. Compelling introductions include kashk-bademjan, a spread of eggplant, caramelized onions, yogurt and mint, and soothing red lentil soup brightened with a spritz of lemon. A range of meaty and vegetarian stews are bobbing with unexpected ingredients like pomegranate, crushed walnuts, shoestring potatoes and tiny dried limes that are best broken up and dispersed. (They're too pungent to digest whole, so don't make the mistake of popping one in your mouth.) Lunch features a bargain two-course menu for $9.95, served alongside basmati rice and warm pita with pickled vegetable salsa. The exposed-brick and plum-hued space is supplemented by a 20-seat dining room next door, which can be reserved for private parties.
