The revered photo-equipment manufacturer famous for creating the world’s first 35mm camera opens its debut NYC retail location. Responsible for creating iconic photographs such as Life’s “V-J Day in Times Square” and National Geographic’s “Afghan Girl,” Leica celebrates its century milestone with a 1,500-square-foot retail space. The modern red-and-black interior is split into a store and a gallery featuring photos from various artists using Leica cameras. The full camera collection is available for purchase, including consumer point-and-shoot versions ($699–$1,995). Find a range of digital full-frame models ($5,450–$7,950), such as those designed for black-and-white photos ($7,950). Collectors and enthusiasts can splurge on special-edition titanium Hermès collaboration cameras ($25,000). If you’re new behind the lens, sign up for an in-store class ($150–$200 each) on how to use equipment with Leica Akademie, then put your new skills to good use on a free walking photography tour.
