The Musket Room
265 Elizabeth St., 212-219-0764, NoLIta, Manhattan
An old-timey musket (a replica) is on display behind the bar, but New Zealand chef Matt Lambert says he chose the name because of his affinity for the pioneer spirit of aspiration, discovery and sharing meals. The interior's lime-washed brick walls lend it a country-farmhouse feel. Lighting is subdued and the back dining room offers a view of a tranquil garden. Lambert (ex–Saxon + Parole, Public) stakes out new culinary territory with a deconstructed steak-and-cheese pie, a reinvented New Zealand classic executed with delicate technique, not at all your typical pub food. In the style of chef-driven restaurants like Pearl & Ash and Alder, there are a number of interesting small plates to have with a drink, such as chicken-fried chicken liver with cherry jus. And do not say no to the house-baked bread, especially when it comes in the form of bacon brioche served with soft butter and smoked salt.
