Fritzl's Lunch Box
173 Irving Ave., 929-210-9531, Bushwick, Brooklyn
This newfangled luncheonette in Bushwick has more than cuteness in its favor. The chef is Dan Ross-Leutwyler, an alum of Roberta's, Fatty 'Cue, The Breslin and Vinegar Hill House—a roster of some of the coolest places in the business. His well-constructed hamburger has a juicy, scarlet center and is dressed with "special sauce" (our guess: modified aioli). The burger alone is worth the trip here, an easy journey on the L train and a block from the DeKalb Ave. stop. Ross-Leutwyler's beer-battered asparagus, fried chicken sandwich and linguine with clam sauce will make you glad you came. Then there's the back garden with tables cheerfully covered in floral oilcloth. While the name might suggest it's just a lunch spot, Fritzl's is open for lunch and dinner and has a well-edited list of small-producer wines and beers.
