Quality Italian Steakhouse
57 W. 57th St., 212-390-1111, Midtown West, Manhattan
From the street-level open-air bar to the grand marble staircase leading up to the dark, sexy dining room and lounge, you'd never guess this used to be a Staples. To transform it, design gurus AvroKO employed intricate cabinetry, dividing screens and handblown glass lighting fixtures, illustrating the miracle of what happens when you combine able imaginations and elbow grease. Quality Italian is the sister restaurant to Michael Stillman's Quality Meats and attracts the same sort of swanky, business crowd. The most talked about dish is the pizza-sized, shareable, cheese-draped chicken parmigiana (which is sliced with a pizza wheel). Lighter options include gnudi with corn, pistachios, basil and black pepper—an ethereal marvel. The steakhouse theme comes through with a number of chops, porterhouse for two and reinvented old-school favorites like baked clams and chopped salad topped with a fried onion ring.
