  • The East Pole Kitchen & Bar
    133 E. 65th St., 212-249-2222, Upper East Side, Manhattan
Anyone who's been to The Fat Radish on the edge of Chinatown—or gotten wind of its glamorousness but couldn't quite make it there—now has the chance to check out an Upper East Side variant called The East Pole. The outdoor patio in front feels more Europe than NYC, its tables grouped under an arbor. Occupying two floors of a handsome brownstone, the interior has a streamlined, stylish design. On the upper floor, where private parties can be booked, the décor includes a series of vintage maps, suggesting thoughts of exploration. The tentlike, stitched ceiling fabric is meant to evoke pioneer know-how, though it also looks like the back of a laced corset. Englishmen Ben Towill and Phil Winser and Brinkley's Tom and Anthony Martignetti are behind the operation. Fat Radish executive chef Nicholas Wilber oversees regionally sourced, compelling vegetable dishes with bits of meat and fish here and there. Scotch eggs, grilled cheese with pickles and kale Caesar salad with anchovies and thick-cut bacon are all comfort-food standouts.
