The crumpet, a teacake that's served on Downton Abbey and giggled about on The Ricky Gervais Show, enters the modern vernacular at The Winslow, a new, UK–inspired gastropub. The nooks and crannies of the English muffin–like base are a warm, spongy delivery system for house-smoked salmon, braised Moroccan lamb or a smear of goat cheese and shredded duck confit—a ripping bar snack for only $4. Fish and chips and bubble and squeak are other good trips down memory lane. Drinking is the primary reason to set your compass for this hospitable East Village watering hole—over 20 beers on tap, lots of gins, whiskeys and specialty cocktails engineered by Dominic Venegas of The NoMad—but it's nice to know proper attention is also paid to the food.
