Bromberg Bros. Blue Ribbon Fried Chicken
28 E. 1st St., 212-228-0404, East Village, Manhattan
The competition for the title of best fried chicken in the City just got tighter with the opening of this East Village restaurant. You may hear fanatics around you arguing over rivals—like Hill Country Chicken, Pies 'n' Thighs, The Dutch and Questlove's Hybird—while still being unable to fault Blue Ribbon's matzo-meal-crusted, well-seasoned, juicy birds. What's extra nice is how you can customize your order: only dark meat, only white meat, only wings or one piece of each (those who go the nonfried route can opt for chicken burgers). Table caddies hold bottles of owners Bruce and Eric Bromberg's signature wildflower honey, honey mustard, chipotle honey and barbecue sauce, but the chicken's plenty good without any of it. The casual space has communal tables and stools along the windowed counter and stays open well past midnight for late-night cravings.
