At the base of a handsome Beaux-Arts building and just around the corner from Barneys New York is Rôtisserie Georgette, which feels exactly right for the neighborhood. The people here are not Yelpers—they're more inclined to conversation than staring at cell phones, exhibiting the sort of fashion sense that perks up the antennae of photographer Bill Cunningham. Proprietor Georgette Farkas is elegant herself, gliding through the dining room with the grace of a ballet dancer, conversant in French and fine cuisine from her many years as Daniel Boulud's director of communications. The venue features French cuisine, with most main plates cooked on the accoutrement that gives the place its name. The silver has heft and the checks are presented on pewter trays, yet the restaurant feels more informal than fancy. Tables are not shrouded in linen, and a semi-open kitchen displays the rotisserie where poultry and meat are spun to perfection. Terracotta-hued wallpaper and blue Portuguese tiles warm up the high-ceilinged space, a classic built to last rather than to follow any trend.
