Schnipper's Quality Kitchen
620 Eighth Ave., 212-921-2400, Midtown, Manhattan
Great for kids and adults alike, Schnipper's is at the base of the Renzo Piano–designed New York Times building, within easy walking distance from Times Square. The glass-walled cafeteria is the opposite of highbrow, with an all-American menu of burgers, hot dogs, macaroni and cheese, good salads, milk shakes and a low-priced selection of wine and beer. Leo and Andrew Schnipper, also the founders of Hale & Hearty Soups, are proud to feature their mother's sloppy joes here, the perfect comfort food before you hit the hay (the restaurant is open until 11pm most days). Early visitors should look for happy hour specials seven days a week from 3pm to 6pm.
