200 Fifth Ave., 212-229-2560, Flatiron District, Manhattan
The crowds at Eataly haven't melted away since its opening nearly three years ago, and now comes another reason to elbow your way in: the rooftop restaurant and beer garden, Birreria. The retractable roof makes it a year-round affair, but when it's open to the sky, there are magnificent views of the Flatiron Building and Empire State Building. Line up at the elevator near the housewares department and be aware that it can be a long wait, especially at sunset; to expedite the ascent, online reservations are available. The garden holds 150 and serves an extensive menu of house-made sausages and pork shoulder. If you're in the mood for something lighter, try an apple salad made with fennel, speck and asiago, or chicken thighs with squash, zucchini and cremini mushrooms. But you know why you're really here: drinks. Fifteen wines, 10 beers on tap and 30 bottled varieties are supplemented by three cask-conditioned ales (one seasonal) brewed on the premises. —Julie Besonen
