    It isn't easy to steal the thunder from bombastic celeb chef Mario Batali, but many feel that the gelato of Meredith Kurtzman, the pastry chef at his popular Greenwich Village pizzeria, has done just that. Her olive oil–flavored frozen creation, dotted with high-quality extra virgin and sprinkled with sea salt, has won droves of fervid fans on its own. Patrons can order flavors à la carte or gelato-based treats from the dessert menu, such as the Otto banana tartufo (a chocolate brownie with banana gelato, caramelized white chocolate and spiced peanuts) or the classic Black & White (milk chocolate chip and crème fraîche gelati topped with hazelnut brittle, chocolate sauce and caramel cream). In the summertime, Otto sells a few flavors of gelato at a satellite stand (the "Gelotto" cart) in nearby Washington Square Park. —KS
