  • Sant Ambroeus
1000 Madison Ave., 212-570-2211, Upper East Side, Manhattan
The elegant scripted logo of this Upper East Sider is the tip-off that this isn't your usual gelato stand. Originating in 1936 in Milan, Sant Ambroeus is as pedigreed as its Madison Avenue patrons. The "ladies who lunch" are often seated in the full-service restaurant room in the back, following their pastas with pastries, while local shoppers stop in for the café, and its gelato, in the front. Expect conservative flavors—chocolate, vanilla, hazelnut, coffee, mango—and high prices to match the good quality. In the summertime, sweets-loving celebs and the society set relocate to the Southampton branch, of course. —KS
