Behind the Glass: Having crafted original holiday displays since the early 1870s, Macy's is the grande dame of the storefront-stage set, so the store rightfully need look no further than its own history for inspiration. This year, the windows at the Macy's Herald Square flagship store do just that by incorporating classic Christmas folklore and the store's own traditions into storybook New York City settings. Themed The Magic of Christmas, the displays feature wooden puppetlike characters that evoke the earliest Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade balloons as well as cartoon-inspired scenes from the new Macy's musical Yes, Virginia, depicting the famous 1897 New York Sun editorial responding to a young girl's query about Santa Claus. The windows also include Christmas wishes from children associated with the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Bring Home: A charming Yes Virginia Doll ($19.99), similar to the figure found inside the window display.
