  • Honorable Mention
    The Chipper Truck
Katonah Ave. and 237th St., Bronx
Vendy Cup finalist The Chipper Truck didn't take home a prize but we think it deserves a shout-out anyway. Alice and Valentino Bermejo may drive the only Irish food truck in town, catering to Bronx revelers in the wee hours seven days a week. It all started in 2004 when Alice (née O'Brien) realized she couldn't find her favorite midnight noshes from home: boxty and taco chips. She had assumed all Irish people knew about those dishes, but discovered they were particular to County Leitrim, where she grew up. To satisfy her craving, she would have to make them herself, with some aid from her Mexican husband, Valentino, a veteran diner cook. Taco chips may sound Mexican, but Alice says they're Irish, a pile of fries doused with minced beef and cheese, akin to poutine. Boxty are thin, savory potato pancakes, an Irish take on the latke. Beer-battered burgers and chili dogs are other reasons the couple has such a zealous, late-night following. The truck operates from 10pm to 6am.
