I'll Eat You Last: A Chat With Sue Mengers
Bette Midler is coming back to Broadway for the first time in 30 years to play superagent Sue Mengers. It'll also be the first time since Midler's Broadway debut in the original 1964 production of Fiddler on the Roof that she'll play someone on Broadway that is not Bette Midler. Though let it be said that Mengers—an outspoken, blond-haired Hollywood powerhouse who helped shape the careers of stars like Faye Dunaway, Marlon Brando and Barbra Streisand—doesn't seem like much of a stretch. Playwright John Logan—whose last Broadway play, Red, cleaned up at the 2010 Tony Awards—met Mengers only once, at a dinner party; but when he saw her sitting on her couch, wearing oversize tinted glasses with a cigarette in one hand and a joint in the other, he started writing. As soon as Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter, a close friend of Mengers, heard Logan's idea, he helped connect the playwright to people from her life and jumped on as a producer. The one-woman play takes place on a single night of Mengers' life, and will surely be a memorable night for the audience as well.
Theater to be announced. Opens April 24.
