  • Ann
Veteran actress Holland Taylor has been standing behind men for most of her career, playing the boss of a very young Tom Hanks in Bosom Buddies and the mother and grandmother of her troubled Two and Half Men co-stars Charlie Sheen and Angus T. Jones. But now it's time for the 70-year old character actress to take center stage as Ann Richards—the fiery, silver-coiffed 45th governor of Texas—in a one-woman show that she wrote and co-produced herself. Taylor met Richards once at lunch with their friend New York Post columnist Cindy Adams, but it wasn't until after the democratic powerhouse died of cancer at 73 that Taylor became obsessed with her climb from ordinary housewife to the top of Texas politics. Taylor spent years interviewing Richards' friends and campaign workers and becoming an expert in Texas politics in her research for the show, which digs into the governor's work for prisons, schools, Hispanics and women in the capital, along with her personal life—including her battle with alcoholism and her painful divorce.
Vivian Beaumont Theatre, 150 W. 65th St. Previews begin February 18; opens March 7.
