On Sundays, Harlem brims with headgear in fantastic shapes, colors and sizes, as the local ladies go to worship, then to brunch. During the rest of the week, such spectacular hats abound at Bruce Elliott, a cozy uptown boutique that specializes in women's chapeaux. Sunny yellow walls are lined with gilt shelves piled high with theatrical pieces, such as a fuzzy black felt fedora adorned with crystals ($400) and a rhinestone-encrusted tan horsehair cloche ($1,500). Some flashy jewelry ($50--$200) and smart leather handbags ($95--$350) are also on display. However, proprietor and neighborhood-resident Elliott keeps the emphasis on his customers' favorites: "hats with lots of drama."
