A venerable alternative-art exhibition space that boasts Marina Abramović and Rufus Wainwright on its board of directors, Clocktower Gallery has been in operation since 1972, when it was an early home for the art of Laurie Anderson, Richard Tuttle and Gordon Matta-Clark. Founder Alana Heiss, who later founded P.S.1, returned to the gallery in 2008, revitalizing it with work from a new generation of artists, like noise-rock band Japanther, G Lucas Crane and James Franco.
