The summer home of the City's Public Theater and its celebrated annual summer event, Shakespeare in the Park, this 1,800-capacity, open-air theater was founded in 1962, and it has presented a repertory production of Shakespeare every summer since. Tickets are free and available on a first-come, first-served basis. Performances are typically star-studded—previous productions have featured Meryl Streep, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Denzel Washington, Richard Dreyfuss, Anne Hathaway and Natalie Portman.
