This massive structure dates back to the late 1800s, when it was created as the ultimate boys' club. Intricate, wood-paneled rooms surrounded a giant drill hall used by volunteer militia. More recently, the Park Avenue Armory has played host to more modern exhibitions: a painting created by motorcycles, a Tori Amos concert and the Royal Shakespeare Company, to name a few. The building fills an entire City block on the Upper East Side, and offers a hard-to-find (in Manhattan, at least) raw space that can be utilized by everyone from artists to antique dealers.
