Thanks to its owners, Taavo Somer and Will Tigertt of Freemans fame, Peels is a hip scene from breakfast till midnight. The bi-level space encompasses a coffee bar, a take-out bakeshop, a diner counter, a cocktail bar, communal seating and a more formal restaurant experience upstairs where reservations are accepted for six or more. Big picture windows, foliage and flowers warm up the modern, bohemian decor. For takeout, the prepared sandwiches are generally excellent, such as the "gobblecado," with house-smoked turkey, arugula, avocado and chili mayo on flauta bread. You can also build your own biscuit sandwich with fillings like organic scrambled eggs, bacon, country ham or sausage. The dinner menu has a more regional Southern cast, with free-range fried chicken, crispy pulled pork and cornmeal-crusted catfish with jalapeño stone grits and hush puppies.
