Jean-Georges vet Josh Eden flies solo at this cozy neighborhood bistro--a worthy alternative to nearby Raoul"s. Though the ho-hum wine list needs work, Eden"s haute American menu is competent and consistent. The showstopping mac and cheese is topped with a panko{/I}-Gruyère crust, while short ribs appear braised and lavished with jus, or ground into a top-notch burger. Desserts don"t hit the same high notes, but no worries: Shorty"s isn"t the place for the full three-course buckle-loosener.
