Manhattan – Lower East Side
107 Norfolk St between Delancey and Rivington Sts
Tonic, a former kosher winery on the Lower East Side, has become one of the city's leading venues for avant-garde, creative and experimental music. Rock, pop and electronic sounds routinely alternate with jazz and improvisation. It can't be ignored that Tonic is also one of the most beloved clubs in town; when faced with eviction recently, the spot was saved when fans and musicians banded together to raise more than $100,000. In Subtonic, the basement DJ lounge, guests can loll around inside giant (but alas, empty) wine casks.
