“Vannie” opened in 1895 as the nation’s first public golf course: notables to play here have included Babe Ruth and Joe Louis. Recent renovations have provided new greens and tee boxes, improved bunkers and better drainage. A lakeside clubhouse offers equipment rental facilities, lockers and a snack shop. The course is easily accessible by car or via a short walk from the MTA’s Van Cortlandt Park subway station.
