New York City is made up of five boroughs: the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island. Each one has enough attractions—and enough personality—to be a city all its own. Learn more about them with this guide.
Since starting her line of vegan, fair-trade winter coats in 2009, Leanne Mai-ly Hilgart has developed a full line of eco-conscious women's apparel. Now Hilgart finally has a space to house her ethical creations in this 500-square-foot flagship, playfully outfitted with chalkboard walls, a light box projecting stars on the back of the fitting rooms, and refurbished yellow lockers that display hand-printed jersey tees ($26--$32), emblazoned with phrases such as "V is for Vegan" or "I can't even look at you in that fur." A "Yes your puppy is welcome, no your fur is not" sign hangs on the front door, and handmade paper animal heads rest on the mannequins to complete the shop's critter-friendly feel. Among the highlights are printed organic-cotton and recycled-crepe dresses ($185), bamboo jersey rompers ($85) and hemp-and-organic-cotton denim overalls ($185).
