Manhattan – SoHo
160 Prince St at Thompson St
Manhattan, NY 10012
Since 1920, this tiny storefront has offered freshly baked Italian breads, created from the generations-old recipes of the Dapolito family. Footsore Soho shoppers and local worker bees stop for breakfast specialties like Neapolitan eggs (fried and tucked into a slice of Italian bread), salads, made-to-order sandwiches and house-made desserts. The signature Vesuvio panino includes a generous helping of Italian charcuterie layered with mozzarella, tomato and olive spread, all neatly encased between two dense slices of surprisingly tender, buttery bread. Don't be insulted if the counterperson quickly pulls an espresso for a regular patron before taking your sandwich order--with a few more visits, you might earn such preferential treatment yourself.
