Manhattan – Lower East Side
160 Orchard St between Rivington and Stanton Sts
Racks upon racks of hats, each one different from the next, line the exposed brick walls of this small Lower East Side shop. Milliner Victor Osborne carefully handcrafts each hat in a workspace in the back. Feel free to watch the process from start to finish, or take your time trying on each piece till you find the perfect fit. Unsure about what works for you? Osborne is always on-hand to dole out advice, and will personally help you pick out something that works best for you. "It's always fun helping people who feel like they're turning an age where they should be wearing hats," he admits. His favorites include The Villa straw wide-brim sunhat ($250), The Havana overlay weave Panama hat ($275) or The Rodeo linen hat ($120). Don't think you have to settle for what you see--feel free to make your own adjustments--like substituting felt material for straw to create a personal one-of-a-kind look.
