Josh Konecky, Eisenberg’s Sandwich Shop

Josh Konecky, the owner of Eisenberg’s Sandwich Shop, gives a glimpse into the life of this local institution, which has been serving pastrami, BLTs and tuna fish sandwiches since 1929. Konecky, born just five blocks away from the restaurant, started as a loyal patron of the eatery before becoming its owner. Determined to preserve the restaurant, he bought Eisenberg’s with the promise to leave it unchanged, and today, he presides over a lunch counter where the menu, employees and customers have remained the same for decades—a bit of old New York that has endured, even as the neighborhood has changed dramatically.
