The 12 Best 2019 New York City Baseball Promotional Days and Giveaways

Jonathan Zeller

New York City’s four baseball teams—two in the majors, two in the minors—work hard to fill seats on game days. In addition to the action on the field, they offer a stacked lineup of fun giveaways and theme nights. Here are some of our favorites coming up in 2019; check with the teams for more, including some to be announced.

1. 1969 Pregame Ceremony and Pennant

June 29, Mets
The Mets’ unlikely World Series win in 1969—which earned them the “Miracle Mets” nickname—helped solidify their image as lovable, plucky underdogs who could defy the odds. This ceremony will feature appearances by members of that championship team—and likely some emotional tributes to ace pitcher Tom Seaver, whose health issues have forced him to retire from public life.

2. Mariano Rivera Hall of Fame Celebration

August 17, Yankees
Closer Mariano Rivera recently joined the cavalcade of Yankees to reach the Baseball Hall of Fame, becoming the first player in history to be elected unanimously. This is a chance to fete him, watch a team whose current bullpen is among the best in baseball and maybe see Mariano sprint out to Metallica’s “Enter Sandman” one more time.

3. Pregame Father’s Day Catch

June 16, Cyclones
Through the ages, fathers have bonded with their children by throwing a ball back and forth and enjoying one another’s company. Mothers and other guardians, of course, should also feel free to participate at this event.

4. Seinfeld Night

July 5, Mets
The Mets celebrate the 30th anniversary of the New Yorkiest television series of all time. Jerry Seinfeld himself is a big Mets fan. Will he show up? How about Elaine’s boyfriend, former Met Keith Hernandez? Hernandez’s nemeses, Kramer and Newman? We don’t yet know the details, but—considering the success of the Cyclones’ own Seinfeld Nights and the show’s many connections to the Mets—we’re pretty sure it’s going to be fun.

5. Dog Days of Summer and Bark at the Park

Dates TBD, Staten Island Yankees; April 22, May 21 and September 26, Mets
The details of these promotions differ slightly, but here’s the basic deal: you get to bring your dog to a baseball game!

6. Old-Timers’ Day

June 23, Yankees
Retired former Yankees come back to the Bronx in this longstanding annual tradition.

7. Staten Island Pizza Rats

Saturday home games, Staten Island Yankees
A couple years ago, when the Staten Island Yankees considered re-naming the team, fans loved the Pizza Rats moniker—a nod to an intrepid NYC rodent who captured the internet’s heart. The name didn’t stick permanently…but it did make weekend appearances last year, complete with some creative custom merch. The Baby Bombers are bringing the temporary name back on Saturdays in 2019.

8. Mr. Met on the Moon Bobblehead

July 27, Mets
Legend has it that original New York Mets manager Casey Stengel said a man would walk on the moon before the Mets won a World Series. As it happened, he was right—Neil Armstrong stepped onto Earth’s satellite in the summer of 1969, and the Mets won the World Series that fall. This bobblehead answers the question: what if the first person to walk on the moon had been New York Mets mascot Mr. Met? It’s a convincing simulation.

9. Noah Syndergaard (as a batter) bobblehead

June 28, Cyclones
The forces of evil are trying to stop pitchers from batting forever. In fact, even the Cyclones themselves use the DH. But they love the Mets’ Noah Syndergaard, one of baseball’s best-hitting pitchers (who once cranked two homers in a game against the Dodgers), and thus plan to honor Thor with this bobblehead rendering of him at the plate.

10. Fireworks

June 15 and 22; July 3, 19, 20 and 26; August 2, 3, 16, 23, 24 and 30; Staten Island Yankees
NYC’s baseball teams all put on entertaining fireworks shows, but we give extra credit to the Staten Island Yankees because their ballpark has distinctive views of Lower Manhattan.

11. 1999 Commemorative Bat Day

May 5, Yankees
There’s nothing wrong with a good old-fashioned bat day. The giveaway at this one salutes the Yankees’ 1999 championship team.

12. Star Wars Night with Obi-Wan Canóbi Bobblehead

May 25, Mets
Do you like Star Wars and puns? This is the bobblehead for you.
