Who they are:
One of the original Major League Soccer (MLS) franchises—launched as the MetroStars—the Red Bulls have had many strong seasons but have never taken home an MLS Cup championship. Their home field, Red Bull Arena, is a soccer-specific stadium whose metal stands and intimate scale make for a loud environment during big games.
Face of the franchise:
The prolific Bradley Wright-Phillips has been a Red Bull since 2013. He owns the MLS single-season scoring record, is one of only two players in league history to rack up 15 goals in four consecutive seasons (the other being Robby Keane) and is the Red Bulls’ all-time leading scorer. The team has many players who were born or grew up in the New York metropolitan area, but midfielder Alex Muyl is alone in coming from New York City proper.
The Red Bulls reportedly dropped a cool $6.25 million on Argentinian winger Alejandro Romero Gamarra, a 23-year-old who last played for CA Huracán and represented his country in the 2015 Under-20 World Cup. The Red Bulls hope he can be an asset to their attack in combination with Wright-Phillips.
Local supporters’ bar:
There are plenty of NYC bars where you can join fans; one is The Football Factory at Legends.
Random bit of trivia:
Five former franchise coaches also led national teams to the World Cup: Carlos Queiroz (Portugal), Carlos Alberto Parreira (Brazil), Bora Milutinović (Mexico, Costa Rica, United States, Nigeria, China), Bruce Arena (United States) and Bob Bradley (United States).
Take a New Jersey PATH train from the World Trade Center Transportation Hub or Newark Penn Station (which you can get to from NYC’s Penn Station) to the Harrison stop, which is adjacent to the stadium. Ticket prices vary depending on match date and opponent, but start as low as $18 and can run $100 or more for premium seats.
