Memorial Day Weekend marked the unofficial start of summer in New York, and with it the opening of the City's public beaches. Public pools in the five boroughs will open on June 27, and both pools and beaches will remain open 'til Labor Day.
To help you find a place to swim for free this season, we've put together a guide to the City's best beaches, along with a more detailed primer on Staten Island's sand-and-surf scene. If you want to learn to hang ten, you can consider heading out to Rockaway Beach for a surfing lesson. For more info on pools, visit nycparksgov.org, and see the map on the upper-left side of this page with some of our favorites.
