Off-Broadway gets the spotlight each spring when the nominees for the Lucille Lortel Awards are announced. Representing the diversity of the City’s Off-Broadway scene, this year’s nominations are led by KPOP, which received nine nods including Outstanding Musical. This inventive, interactive exploration of a Korean pop-music hit factory was produced at Ars Nova theater in Hell’s Kitchen, which has launched Broadway shows including last year’s Tony-nominated Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812.

Presented by the Off-Broadway League, the Lortels will be handed out on May 6 at NYU’s Skirball Center, with a star-studded show hosted by Broadway vet Laura Benanti (She Loves Me, Meteor Shower) and Jeremy Shamos. In addition to the main awards categories, special honors will be handed out to Eve Ensler (The Vagina Monologues) for Lifetime Achievement, to the WP Theater for Body of Work and to the late Michael Friedman, a writer and composer who will be inducted into the Playwright’s Sidewalk on Christopher Street.

While most of this year’s nominated shows are no longer running, Harry Clarke, a one-man show starring Billy Crudup, recently reopened at the Minetta Lane for a limited run (through May 13). A couple other honored shows are transferring to bigger venues: Desperate Measures starts performances again at New World Stages on May 30, and Torch Song  will be back this fall at the Hayes Theater.
