When some of the City’s legendary lesbian bars closed in recent years (RIP, Meow Mix, Cattyshack and Rubyfruit), some worried NYC’s nightlife scene would take a hit. But the bars that remain keep things thrumming with a welcoming vibe and an array of popular weekly events. Visitors will also find parties offering a range of music—techno, pop, hip-hop, retro—at a variety of city nightspots. Read on for details about three stalwart lesbian hangouts as well as recurring parties for queer women out on the town in NYC.

Bars

Cubbyhole
281 W. 12th St., 212-243-9041, West Village, Manhattan
This joyous corner spot features madcap Mardi Gras decor and a friendly vibe that hasn’t changed since it opened in 1994. Its popular happy hour (Monday to Saturday, until 7pm) is packed with regulars, and drink specials continue late into the night most days of the week. There are also $3 margaritas on Tuesdays, and Sundays feature $4 bloody marys and $5 kir royales from 2 to 7pm.

Henrietta Hudson
438 Hudson St., 212-924-3347, West Village, Manhattan
The longest-running lesbian bar in the City (more than 25 years!) not only survives but thrives thanks in part to its roster of resident DJs, including Tikka Masala, Culi, Rosy Q and Pool Boi. The bar has a wonderfully eclectic calendar of events, including Homotown (old-school soul and hip-hop) on Thursdays and Snatch (dance music) on Saturdays.

Ginger’s Bar
363 Fifth Ave., 718-788-0924, Park Slope, Brooklyn
Park Slope may have gentrified, but this Brooklyn’s neighborhood lesbian bar (also known as “The G-Spot”) continues to draw a lively crowd. Events like Way Gay Karaoke, happy hours Monday to Friday from 5 to 8pm, and Friday night dance parties keep this place hopping. The pool table and spacious backyard make Ginger’s a dependable watering hole for the area’s ladies and their admirers.
