Guide to Lesbian Nightlife in NYC

A few years ago, as many of the City’s legendary lesbian bars were closing (RIP Meow Mix, Cattyshack, Rubyfruit), some worried that NYC’s nightlife scene would take a hit. But these days, the bars that remain host a dynamic scene of weekly and monthly events. Visitors will find parties offering a range of music—techno, pop, hip-hop, retro—at a variety of popular nightspots. Read on for some of the hottest bars, clubs and parties for women out on the town in NYC.

Bars

Henrietta Hudson
438 Hudson St., 212-924-3347, West Village, Manhattan
The longest-running lesbian bar in the City (more than 25 years!) not only survives—it’s also been refreshed with a sexy renovation and a roster of resident DJs like Tikka Masala, Culi, Rosy Q and Pool Boi. The bar has a wonderfully eclectic calendar of events, including Homotown (old-school soul and hip-hop) on Thursdays and Bodega 438 (Latin fusion) on Wednesdays.

Cubbyhole
281 W. 12th St., 212-243-9041, West Village, Manhattan
This joyous corner spot, located within walking distance of Henrietta Hudson, features madcap Mardi Gras decor and a friendly vibe that hasn’t changed since it opened in 1994. Its popular happy hour (Monday to Saturday, until 7pm) is packed with regulars, and drink specials continue late into the night most days of the week. There’s also $2 Margarita Tuesdays, and Sundays feature $4 bloody marys, mimosas and kir royales from 2 to 7pm.

Ginger’s Bar
363 Fifth Ave., 718-788-0924, Park Slope, Brooklyn
Park Slope may have gentrified, but this Brooklyn neighborhood’s lesbian bar (also known as “The G-spot”) continues to draw a crowd. Events like Sunday bingo with Luscious Lola, happy hour Monday to Friday from 5 to 8pm, and Friday night dance parties keep this place hopping. The pool table and spacious backyard make this venue a dependable watering hole for the area’s ladies and their admirers.

Bum Bum Bar
63-14 Roosevelt Ave., 646-618-4498, Woodside, Queens
Queens has always had a healthy Latino LGBTQ scene, and Bum Bum Bar is where you’ll find a predominantly female (but still mixed) crowd dancing to salsa and merengue. This down-to-earth joint, pronounced “boom-boom,” is where Queens residents and visitors can let loose to classic Latin tunes mixed in with the latest pop hits.
