A Bronx Tale, Chazz Palminteri’s solo show loosely based on his upbringing in the Bronx, began its life back in 1989 when it premiered in Los Angeles and was then made into a 1993 movie starring Palminteri as the gangster Sonny who took a young Calogero (Chazz’s given name) under his wing, with Robert De Niro as Calogero’s working-class father. This new musical adaptation set on the stoops of the Bronx in the 1960s features high-energy dance numbers and original doo-wop tunes from the songwriter of Beauty and the Beast as it tells the story of a young man caught between the father he loves and the mob boss he’d love to be. Directed by De Niro and four-time Tony winner Jerry Zaks, it features the music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Glenn Slater and a book by Palminteri, who comes full circle as he joins the cast as Sonny for select performances starting May 24.
