Islam’s holiest city is the subject of this Brooklyn Museum exhibition, which shows the urban redevelopment taking place in Mecca and the effect that the changes in infrastructure are having on the culture. Saudi artist Ahmed Mater has been documenting the restoration—and resulting cultural shifts—for a decade; his photographs, videos and installations document the city’s growth while highlighting the sharp contrasts between the between the new prosperity and the less-affluent construction workers and migrant groups that reside there.
