The Staten Island Children's Museum celebrates Black History Month with a range of public programming. The Second Saturday Science workshop focuses on engineer Lonnie Johnson, who kids will appreciate as the inventor of the Super Soaker (February 9). Children can also create their own portraits inspired by Obama portraitist Kehinde Wiley (February 18) and learn about fashion through the work of stylist André Leon Talley and model Duckie Thot (February 19–20). Throughout the month, the Weekend Art Studio will teach students about the work of Kenyan surrealist artist Wangechi Mutu, and the Friday afternoon Kidz Cook sessions highlight dishes of the Caribbean.
