The Staten Island Children's Museum celebrates Black History month with a range of public programming that recognizes the artists, scientists, fashion designers and athletes from the African diaspora. Highlights include a Second Saturday Science workshop that focuses on Dorothy Vaughan, Mary Jackson and Katherine Johnson, the NASA mathematicians whose work was featured in the movie Hidden Figures (February 10); Très Chic! Cut-Out Clothes celebrates fashion week and the work of designer Tracy Reese and model Chantelle Brown-Young (February 11); and an opportunity for children to practice to be Olympians like Lolo Jones, Vonetta Flowers, Shani Davis, and Debi Thomas (February 20-22). On an ongoing basis, the Weekend Art Studio will teach students about the work of African-American expressionist painter Alma Thomas and the Friday Kidz Cook sessions will allow young chefs to incorporate crops from Africa in their New Orleans Creole dishes.
