American visual artist Pope.L is known for his works that involve arduous and provocative interventions in public spaces. His works are commentaries on race, gender, social struggle and community. The Whitney presents this exhibition as part of a larger celebration of Pope.L’s work known as Instigation, Aspiration, Perspiration, which involves an exhibition at MoMA and a performance piece sponsored by the Public Art Fund. For its part, the Whitney’s Choir component involves a water-based installation, inspired by public fountains and composer John Cage’s use of music and sound.
