Shuffle Along, Or, The Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921 and All That Followed

Music Box Theatre
239 W. 45th St.
Manhattan, NY 10036

Back in 1921, Shuffle Along was a beleaguered, debt-saddled, all-black revue that made its way to Broadway and then miraculously managed to reverse its fortunes, becoming a hit and launching the career of a young Josephine Baker in the process. This production revives not just the original theatrical work, but also—in its behind-the-scenes action—the difficulties that took place offstage. Audra McDonald (Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill, Raisin in the Sun), whose record-breaking six Tony awards have made her a Broadway legend in her own right, stars.
