Grey is located on the site of NYU's original home, the University Building, and it was on this site that Professor Samuel F. B. Morse established America's first academic fine arts department. From 1927 to 1942 this location was the home of A. E. Gallatin’s Museum of Living Art, the first in the US to exhibit work by Picasso, Léger, Mirò, and Mondrian. Grey's current role is to emphasize art's historical, cultural and social contexts. It frequently hosts public programs that align with its rotating exhibits.
