Empellón al Pastor is an outgrowth of Alex Stupak's Empellón Taqueria in the West Village, and his Empellón Cocina just up the road in the East Village. This corner joint is rollicking at night but more mellow during the day. Prices for tequila, mescal, guacamole and tacos are low, especially welcome given the unimpeachable quality of the items on offer. Tortillas are made in-house and best wrapped around spit-roasted pork and a slice of pineapple, though beef with caramelized onions and the juicy chicken and smoky chipotle combo are also excellent. Order from the bar or the open kitchen in back, and make sure to dress up whatever you get with homemade salsa and squeezes of lime.
