Fritzl's Lunch Box is a chef-magnet because of Dan Ross-Leutwyler's surefire kitchen talent and the connections he made while working at maverick restaurants like Fatty 'Cue, The Breslin, Resto, Vinegar Hill House and Roberta's. He makes the kind of food everyone wants in their off-hours, such as a perfect hamburger in a squishy, densely seeded sesame bun and skin-on fries that are crisp on the outside and creamy within. The luncheonette sports a few quirks—a hornets' nest hanging in the window, a shelf of eclectic cookbooks—but the menu is approachable, including a mix of terrific sandwiches and deftly made pastas. Unimpeachable pies come from Pies 'n' Thighs. On nice days, go for a table in the bucolic back garden.
