Spheres of takoyaki (octopus balls) and savory okonomiyaki—shredded cabbage and vegetable pancakes with shrimp or pork—are topped with fluttering bonito flakes, ideal street food representations of what you'd find in Osaka. Medetai are fish-shaped waffles sandwiching sweet red bean paste or banana and chocolate-hazelnut spread, as delightful for adults as they are for children. These snacks are best consumed immediately at the standing counter or on the bench outside the shop. Otafuku x Medetai is a star of the East Village's Japantown scene and part of the Japanese restaurant empire owned by Bon Yagi.
