The city approved the purchase of park’s land for a cost of $5 million. The park that was designed and constructed from 1858 to 1873 by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, who transformed what was rocky, scrub land into the countryside complete with rolling hills, lakes, open fields and rambling woods. After construction was completed, every city in America wanted one of their own. With a total of 843 acres, the park is the largest and most popular urban park in the United States with over 25 million people visiting the each year.
