It’s one of the most beautiful landmarks in New York City with its neo-gothic towers and web of cables that are strung along its length. The Brooklyn Bridge was not only the first lower East River bridge to connected Brooklyn with New York, it was the first steel cable suspension bridge ever built. It was designed John Augustus Roebling, a German immigrant and civil engineer. Construction began in 1958 and it was completed in 1883. On opening day over 1,800 vehicles crossed and over 150,000 people walked across. Today the Brooklyn Bridge is just as popular and necessary for both visitors and commuters alike.
On this walking tour you will learn how the bridge was built and the family that built it.
